In summer season (Mid April to late September), Des and Pat Lavelle run a daily boat trip to Skellig Michael - subject to the weather and sea conditions of the moment. Departure time is 10.30am, and the departure point is Portmagee harbour, a few miles off the Ring of Kerry route. The trip takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes each way, passing very close to Small Skellig and its 27,000 pairs of nesting gannets en route. But don’t have eyes only for the birds; a dolphin can also take flight! Visiting time on Skellig Michael is normally about 2 hours 30 minutes, giving you adequate time to tour the old monastic site 200 metres above the sea, and to admire the puffins, guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes and fulmars nesting on the island from the end of April to the early days of August. You are normally back on the mainland by about 4 pm.

Don’t forget that this is almost a ‘wilderness outing’ to an Atlantic Ocean island where there are no modern facilities. Bring food, water, and sensible clothes. And when you come to Portmagee pier on the appointed day, do ask for ‘Des Lavelle’. Otherwise you may get on the wrong boat with the wrong captain, and go on the wrong tour!
